Why is Water Coming from My Furnace/Air Handler?

December 27, 2022

Leaking water is alarming. Anyone who’s dealt with water damage knows how serious of a problem it can be, but is water coming from your air conditioner cause for concern? Not necessarily. Below we’ll break down when and why water may be coming from your air handler unit and what to do if you need help assessing – and fixing – the situation.

Reasons Water May Be Coming from Your Air Conditioner Handler Unit

It’s completely normal for there to be water near your air handler. Air conditioners operate by forcing air over cold coils. This process naturally creates condensation, which is why your unit comes equipped with a drain pan and condensate drain line.

If the condensate drain line becomes clogged or otherwise damaged, however, it can cause a backup and lead water to overflow out the other side of the unit. This is something that should be corrected to enable your HVAC system to continue operating most efficiently.

Refrigerant, Filters and Leaks, Oh My!

Other reasons water may be coming from your furnace system is because your air filters are dirty. This can restrict the amount of airflow reaching the evaporator coils and thus cause them to freeze over. When that ice melts… yep, a puddle forms.

The same effect occurs when your air conditioner is low on or leaking refrigerant. This, too, can cause your evaporator coils to become covered in a massive block of ice.

What To Do If You See Water By Your AC Unit

If you’re at all concerned about your air conditioner system’s performance, it doesn’t hurt to give a trusted Tampa-area HVAC technician a call.
