Why Is My Heating System Blowing Cold Air?
A heating system is also called a heater because it pumps hot air through vents into a home. At least that is what the system is supposed to do. Things don’t always work out that way, as a heater may blow out cold air. Cold air doesn’t do anyone much good when they need to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature during the winter. A few culprits could be behind the cold air.
Improper Thermostat Setting
Not everyone takes the time to read up on their thermostat’s settings. You have a choice of two settings, and picking the wrong one, by accident or design, means no heat. “AUTO” should be the setting for the thermostat’s fan. If it is set to “ON,” then the blower will run whether or not the heating system produces heated air. With AUTO, the blower only engages when the system heats the air.
Old and Dirty Air Filter
An air filter acts somewhat like a net. Dust, dirt, dander and other debris get caught in the filter. This way, all those impurities don’t circulate. If you don’t change the filter, then clogs emerge. Clogs prevent air from flowing, which can lead to overheating. Overheating can crack the heat exchanger. To prevent this, a failsafe “high-limit switch” turns off the heater’s burners. Once the burners go off, the blower circulates cold air. Routine maintenance can catch things like dirty filters. Pilot Light Went Out
A pilot light provides the small flame that lights the burners. If the pilot light goes out, the gas running through the burners won’t ignite. There is a safe way to reset the pilot light. The owner’s manual details the process. Shutting off the heating system, and then following the reset steps should work. If not, then the pilot light system may require repairs.
