How Can I Keep the Upstairs Cooler?

Effectively cooling our Tampa homes requires us to work a little bit against nature. Because hot air is less dense than cold air, it rises. But all of that rising hot air can be frustrating for homeowners who want to maintain an even temperature throughout their whole home.

The good news is you can keep your upstairs cool and comfortable, even in Florida. It just may require a little intervention to work against the physics of air.

What You Can Do to Keep Your Upstairs Cooler

There are a few simple fixes you can try on your own to better regulate the temperature throughout your home, including the upstairs. You can also always call us at Mario’s AC to schedule an AC inspection. We can help you assess whether there are mechanical improvements you might also want to make to improve your system’s performance.

  • Change your air filter - Dirty air filters mean your air conditioner needs to work harder. It also means there may be restricted airflow. Help your system work most efficiently by changing your air filters monthly.
  • Check your vents and windows - Make sure all vents upstairs are fully opened and your windows are fully closed. You don’t want any cool air escaping out a cracked window. You can also try to manually zone your HVAC system by closing some of the vents on the main floor to help redirect cooler air upstairs. If your home has dampers, you can adjust them seasonally to help balance out the airflow in your home as well.
  • Pay attention to where your thermostat is located - Most homes rely on a single thermostat to control the entire home. If that thermostat is located on the main floor, which it often is, then your HVAC system will turn off when it reaches the desired temperature in that given location. Simply being aware of how your home’s HVAC system operates can help you better intervene when necessary. A more permanent solution for multi-level homes is to consider installing a zoned AC system so you can control different parts of the home individually.
