Comparing HVAC and AC Units

June 21, 2019

At Mario’s Air Conditioning & Heating, we know the importance of a good air conditioning system. In the Florida sun, the heat and humidity can quickly become unbearable if an AC system isn’t working properly. Having a malfunctioning HVAC system is just as bad. However, that doesn’t mean the two different types of systems are the same. If you’re a property owner, it’s important to know the distinctions between AC and HVAC.

The Importance of Air Conditioning

Florida residents rely on air conditioning to keep their homes at a comfortable temperature and to minimize humidity. Depending on the size of your house, you may have window units that do this work for individual rooms or a larger unit that provides climate control to the whole house. All of these AC units work the same way. A refrigerant in the coils of the unit creates a heat transfer so that cold air blows into the residence and warm air blows out. At the same time, as warm, humid air passes over the cold coils, water condenses out of the air onto the coils and is drained from the unit.

HVAC: More Than Just AC

The AC in HVAC stands for air conditioning, but air conditioning is just one part of a full HVAC system. This system allows for climate control in all seasons and temperatures. The elements of an HVAC system will use the same ductwork to do all of its important jobs.

The H in HVAC stands for heating. This isn’t something that Florida residents think about too often, but even here, cooler temperatures can bring the need for home heat. In a typical HVAC system, a furnace that burns fuel like heating oil or natural gas warms the air. Fans will then circulate the air through the system’s ducts into the rooms of the building.

The V in HVAC stands for ventilation. For improved indoor air quality, you need an exchange of stale, indoor air and fresh, outdoor air. This isn’t always practical in an area like Florida where opening doors and windows will let in humid air. Modern energy recovery ventilators can exchange indoor and outdoor air without bringing extra humidity inside.
